Introduction

Background: A unified Thai Kingdom was established in the mid-14 th century.
Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country
never to be taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in
1932 led to a constitutional monarchy

Location: Southeastern Asia, bordering the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand,
southeast of Burma.

Capital: Bangkok known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon or Krung Thep for
short. Bangkok is on the east bank of the Chao Phraya River, near the Gulf
of Thailand. Bangkok is the wealthiest and most populous city in Thailand,
as well as the 22 nd most populous city in the world. It is a major economic
and financial centre in south-east Asia.
Bangkok has one of the fastest rates
in the world for construction of high rise buildings. The full ceremonial
name of the city given by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke, and later edited
by King Mongkut, is Krungthep Mahanakhon Amonrattanakosin
Mahintharayatthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathani
Buriromudomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amonphiman Awatansathit
Sakkathattiya Witsanu Kamprasit.
This ceremonial name is composed of two ancient Indian languages, Pali
and Sanskrit. It translates to "The city of angles, the great city, the eternal
jewel city, the impregnable city of God Indra, the grand capital of the world
endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an
enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns
the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukam".
The full name of the city is listed by the Guinness Book of Records as
the world's longest place name. Bangkok has an area of 1,568.7 sq km.

Economy

Economy -
overview:

With a well-developed infrastructure, a free-enterprise economy and
pro-investment policies, Thailand appears to have fully recovered from
the 1997-98 Asian Financial Crisis.
The country was one of East Asia's best performers in 2002-04. Boosted
by increased consumption and strong export growth, the Thai economy
grew 6.9% in 2003 and 6.1%in 2004 despite a sluggish global economy.
Bangkok has pursued preferential trade agreements with a variety of
partners in an effort to boost exports and to maintain high growth.
Exports have performed at record levels, rising nearly 17 % in 2006.
Export-oriented manufacturing - in particular automobile production -
and farm output are driving these gains.
